Renewable Energy

Related Product Advice

For most homes renewable energy is available in the form of PV (solar energy), wind power or hydropower provided by the utilities. All are viable ways to reduce the emissions created when energy is produced using prevalent methods like burning coal or natural gas.

Some major utility companies have followed the lead of many energy co-operatives who utilize renewable energy in the mix of their energy production. Residential customers in many markets can now commit a portion of their bill, usually added as a premium to their utility charges, to the purchase of renewable energy. The additional money goes toward building infrastructure needed to produce and deliver renewable energy for the future.

Of course, homeowners may choose to be more active in reducing their need for non-renewable energy by purchasing renewable energy products such as photovoltaic or solar hot water panels for their individual residence. In some areas where electricity prices experience wild fluctuations, installation of high-cost, high-tech products coupled with state and/or local incentives, homeowners are finding the payback timeframes for such systems are rapidly decreasing. While it is always advisable to conduct a personal cost-benefit analysis for any major purchase, the uncertainties around future energy prices make such analyses difficult. One thing is certain though, the price of energy generated from fossil fuels can only go up.
