Adhesives

Adhesives that need ventilation or can’t be around fire and sparks are usually laden with volatile organic compounds, or VOC’s. The dangers to human health from VOC’s are sufficient to inspire the development of adhesives with less or none of the dangerous chemicals. New adhesives do the same job with fewer environmental and health risks.

If you have seen this warning on your adhesive container, perhaps reconsider the products you are putting into your home:

Always use proper ventilation with solvent-based products. Extinguish all sources of ignition, including pilot lights, open flames, and sources of sparks. Do not smoke or use electrical equipment in work area.

Products that require a label similar to the one above are toxic; they contain solvents that release VOC’s, or volatile organic compounds. These are toxic products to be avoided in the home if possible because of the risks they pose to human health. They are equally unhealthy for the installer to work with.

The alternative to the traditional adhesive is a solvent free or reduced solvent adhesive. These products are environmentally superior, have reduced health risks and perform equally well. Unlike solvent-based adhesives, these are nonflammable, emit no harmful fumes, and can be cleaned with water. Solvent free adhesives remain permanently flexible, age well and are generally not affected by moisture.
