Forest Stewardship Certified Decking

Related Product Advice

The Forest Stewardship Council certifies wood products that have been sustainably harvested. You may expect to pay a 5% premium for FSC wood to ensure that it comes from sustainably managed forests. Certified forestry principles include forest management practices that protect biological diversity, conservation of ancient natural woodland, long-term responsible management, recognition of indigenous peoples’ and forest workers’ rights and regular monitoring.

Consider using FSC products when building a wood deck. FSC certified wood products are sustainably harvested, ensuring the future of the forest as well as the health of the local ecosystem from where the trees were harvested. At this time FSC lumber is available in most markets, and is growing in market share. Generally a 5% premium is paid for FSC, which allows you to know that the wood you purchased has been sustainably grown and harvested.

There are a few third party certifications for wood available; however the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification is the only system that verifies “chain of custody” through monitoring each step of the production process through to the finished material. By purchasing certified material, you are encouraging more sustainable forest management and business practices.
