Wood is often a first choice of homeowners because of its warmth and honest, earthy composition. Humans have been drawn to this natural building material for centuries. Of all window framing materials, wood is the only truly renewable material. Choosing wood can be healthy and harmonious.
Because of the advanced technologies applied to building materials, wood can also be an energy conscious choice as well. However, wood windows require more maintenance and are susceptible to rot and warping if not protected from moisture.
Wood is a low-conductivity material and the core of a wood window frame is solid, rather than hollow. Wood framed windows can provide U-values around .30 for low-e glass and around .50 for clear glass.
As with any product made from wood, where that wood comes from is an essential question. At this time there are several manufacturers who are using false;”> Forest Stewardship Council certified wood to frame their windows. Forest Stewardship Council adheres to the most rigorous standards for certifying wood products in the world. FSC promotes global foresting operations that support a diverse group of stakeholders including industry, community groups and environmentalists. Consumers purchasing FSC approved products are assured those products came from responsibly managed forests. FSC products should be the first choice if choosing to use a wood framed window in the home.
Since wood is a completely natural option, the only consideration when ensuring a healthy choice for your home is the finish. There are several low- or no-VOC finishes available. Be sure the finish on the product is as low VOC as possible.
Eliminating air leakage around windows can be accomplished by one of the following methods when installing:
A low-expansion foam sprayed between the window frame and wall framing (not stuffing insulation)
-or-
where air barriers or foam sheathing is used, seal around the exterior of windows with air barrier tape or caulk.
Once you have selected the wood window, don’t overlook installation. Always, quality installation is essential in optimal performance of the product. One obvious but often overlooked note is that windows must be properly squared when installed to avoid gaps that increase air infiltration.
The wood window frames can be painted or finished however you choose. The only down side is that they also require a lifetime of maintenance such as painting. The frequency of maintenance and upkeep is related to the quality of the materials. For instance, a better finish will last longer. Higher quality wood will have a longer life and be more resistant to rot and decay which are common plagues for real wood windows.
