Foundations

Related Product Advice

Foundations are the – well, foundation of your home. Your entire home rests on the foundation, so it better be high quality.

There are a number of ways to view the foundation issue. From the resource conservation perspective, using less material, and minimal disruption of the natural environment around the home, are both goods. The resources involved in digging out a deep foundation to create the deep frost protection commonly believed to be necessary in a cold climate, aren’t always required anymore.

Basements are a conventional residential option that many contractors build into each and every home because it has been done that way for decades. The most important aspect of a good foundation beyond structural integrity is retardation of moisture and vapors that may seep into the home. But with more marginal land being built upon such as those on tight soils or on or near wet areas along with more biological concerns (spores, critters) – foundations are more important than ever.

Be sure the contractor you select can discuss foundation options at length before going ahead with a conventional design. It is possible more geological research of the building site would be a good investment. A good contractor will discuss your options and know about the pros and cons of each especially with regard to your particular area.

Before you buy... Drip Irrigation

The most efficient watering method available, drip irrigation, brings moisture directly to the plants that need water. Conventional sprinkler systems loose 30% to 70% of total water to evaporation and run-off, where drip irrigation minimizes water loss losing almost no water to evaporation. Drip irrigation systems can be on the surface or buried below the soil. The reduced flow rate and elimination of airborne water delivery makes these systems significantly more efficient.
