I am going to be brief-well maybe not-have a lot of issues
Bought 6 molded solid core doors-special order to fit
3 fell apart at the ends- returned for replacement
None were made correctly – they chopped off one side of door to size it
There should be the same amount of wood on each end of the door-there isn’t
Door holes had tear out on one side-when you bore a hole you either do it from both sides or support the exit hole size so you do not get tear out
Door locks on edge side were not centered
Door hinge cutouts were ok-thank god
Molded skin did not cover the entire door end to end on some doors
Wood used for sides was crap-not even a solid piece-used fingerjoint wood
Purchased a 1 special order pre-hung door for closet and it was perfect
Apparently Masonite has no Quality Control in CA
Home Depot was most gracious in assisting me though-Kudos to them
Sent letter to Masonite on matter-I doubt they will respond
Hope the doors I have hung do not fall off the hinges-Home Depot says I have 1 year warranty
Followed Installation instruction to the T. After making sure opening was Square, level, and plumb, installed unit (2 door entry, 2 door sidelite french). found 3 of 4 door not closing properly. after making adjustments, was able to get side 1 door to fit. After extensive examination found hinges on side lite door out of alignment
1/4” from other side lite door and eventually had to mortise to correct. also had to mortise the 2 main door hinges to fit. This unit was perfect square and level and plumb, and the doors would not fit properly. after 4 additional hours of corrections I would be very Leary of any future Masonite product. I know I will not recommend this product line. Spend a little more $ and save on Labor of corrections. Oh and BTW It does no good to complain. Just don’t buy their product!I bought a Masonite door for Home Despot that sat in my living room for a few weeks before I had it installed. Installer had trouble getting the door to close correctly and squaring the jamb etc. After awhile we noticed the hinges were installed so unevenly that they’ll have to be reinstalled. Lame.
Masonite FiberGlass Doors – Garbage
First active door was replaced in the first year… The replacement started warping 2 months ago. Complete garbage.
These doors 100% need a multi-point lock to prevent them from warping.
DO NOT BUY THESE CRAP DOORS
DO NOT BUY A MASONITE DOOR! THE BOTTOM OF THE FRAME OF OUR EXTERIOR DOOR BEGAN TO ROT. ALSO THE MOULDING AROUND THE SIDE LITES CRACKED. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT IS BECAUSE WE PAINTED IT RED. I AM BEGINNING TO WONDER IF OUR INSIDE DOORS ARE MASONITE SINCE THEY DO NOT CLOSE PROPERLY AND HAVE WARPED. PURE JUNK! OUR HOME IS NOT EVEN 5 YEARS OLD. NO ONE WANTS TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR DOORS.
Let me tell you that an entry door does not cost 00!! You pay for what you get and thats the bottom line! Best solution, buy a solid wood entry door from a manufacturer direct pref. smaller! They tend to stay behind their product!
Everything else is B.S. 90% of fiber glass doors warp! Some dealers now will not sell you a fiber glass door unless it is equipped with a multi point lock systems and that is not because they worry about your security its because it slows down the warping process of the door! But let me tell you, when it does warp you are locked out of your home!!!
EXACTLY the same circumstance as the first review. Less than 5 year old door rotting at the bottom and told it’s because I didn’t “caulk/paint” properly. Totally untrue. The door jam was caulked and the entire door painted. From reading other reviews this seems to be their standard response to deny a claim. I should have returned the door when I notice that only the front and back were fiberglass and the edges exposed wood (I have other fibeglass doors that are entirely fiberglassed with no wood exposed.) Bottom line – DO NOT BUY A MASONITE DOOR, THEY DO NOT STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCT.
DON’T BUY A MASONITE DOOR. We purchased a Masonite exterior door from Home depot on 28AUG05 and it was installed approx. Sep/Oct. Not sure when it was delivered. We just finished remodeling our house, so that was the last thing we had to do. I have two neighbors that loved our door, so they too purchased a Masonite door from Home depot. Well, this past December I noticed a black spot on the door frame towards the bottom. Our entire bottom door frame is so rotten, you can see into our house. It is no longer water tight. The door itself has rot on the hinged side behind the weather strip. I called Masonite and they had the inspector come out. He wasn’t here more than 15 minutes and he had stated that this was the forth masonite door he looked due to rot. Two weeks later, masonite e-mails me stating that they are denying my claim because I didn’t maintain the bottom seal on the door. WHO THE HECK SHOULD THINK ABOUT A SEAL ON A DOOR THAT IS ONLY 4 ½ YEARS OLD. I have a Home depot rep that is assisting me as much as he can, but I think I will have to eat this. I spent 76.00 on this door in 2005 and that is not installation. Masonite knows this is going to be a 00.00 repair and they have washed there hands of it because they said I didn’t maintain the seal. I will make sure everyone that I know never buys a masonite door.
Wow, I wished I saw this review sheet before I purchased two Masonite fiberglass doors. NEVER AGAIN!!! RUN!!!! Another common denominator, Home Depot (where I purchased mine from). I’ve had two warranty claims on the door. The first one, Masonite honored. The first issue was the two doors were set in so tight in the prehung jambs that it would not open without rubbing. Masonite sent two sets of jambs and sills. Two because the first set that arrived was damaged by the delivery company. The 2nd didn’t work because it still did not allow 1/8” clearances between doors and jamb. My installer finally installed his own set of jambs and sills.
The 2nd claim we had was after the doors were installed, we noticed one door was warped 3/8”. Doesn’t sound like much but it’s very noticeable. Masonite had their local rep visit (again) and this time the rep said it is warped but only by 1/8” (bs, he needs a new measuring tape). Masonite now won’t honor the warranty saying 1/8” is allowed warpage for their advertised NO WARP fiberglass doors (ha ha ha). What’s more, the rep added the installation had issues (ha ha, we had to install our own jambs because of the initial problem with Masonite prehung doors).
I think this is unjust and we should get a class action suit against this company!
I will NEVER buy Masonite AGAIN or use Home Depot for large projects (I purchased my cabinets and garage doors from HD, and surprise, they also have issues). The thing with Home Depot is that they drop you once you install a product purchased there.
anyone out there able to compare Masonite exterior fiberglass doors and Therma Tru doors. My contractor just switched out my Therma Tru doors and I would like to know if Masonite is comparable.
Bad Experience!
I purchases a prehung double garden door from Sarnia Ontario Home Depot.
The operational door is warped. They sent a rep to take a look at it.
The rep concluded that the door is warped and needs to be replaced. He also noted in his report that the door frame was 1/8” out of level – ie 1/16” per door. Masonite now refuses to honour the warranty because they say that the installation is incorrect and must be fixed first because it’s policy – even though everyone agrees that the installation is just fine and has no bearing on the warped door issue.
I have decided to replace the entire door with the product of a better manufacturer, because even if it was perfect – the weather seal would still be substandard.
Garbage, garbage, garbage!
I’ve had to remortise hinges on 75% of about 40 doors in one build. Also, they put labels that lave residue on stainable doors. Materials are fine, craftsmanship is crap!
If one of the comments above is true (that Masonite only makes the blanks, fine, whatever). All I know is that Masonite gave me 30% of my money back after they sent a representative out to verify the poor fit. Whoever is responsible for this crappy quality, they should be strung up by their toenails! They’re responsible for America going down the drain in manufacturing.
Do yourself a favor if you have ahousefull of these…contact Masonite and ask for a partial refund! They will fess up and pony up a refund.
I bought 2 of these safe n sound doors for my kids bedrooms. The did nothing to deaden the sound. I think the original door did a better job. If it is sound proofing you are after look elswhere
First after reading these reviews I find a couple common elements.
Number 1 Home Depot. Everyone in the construction industry knows H.D. and there vendors suck.
H.D. is not buying prehung interior doors from Masonite. They buy them from a from a local company who they pay to install them into a jam. Masonite makes the blanks.
The fact that a hinge might not line up perfectly is more a reflection on H.D. and their vendor and not Masonite.
Number 2 Almost all the issues I read here are installation issues. Trim Carpentry and door installation is a skill. Installing a door to fit an opening CORRECTLY is not something most do it yourselfers can do correctly. When something doesn’t line up right they blame it on slab company.
French doors are challenging even for seasoned installers. Not some thing most homeowners can do,
Hire a professional.
We have installed 1000’s of masonite doors that look and perform as they should.
We bought a door with two sidelights. Headache from day number one. We had two staples in the bottom of the door(not where they were supposed to be)
I had a person with 40 years experince in maintanece install the door and the side lights wont open the locking mechanisms are off. They sent a contracted independent rep (I think) and they said the door is not intalled properly. The frame is square in 4 corner and diagonally and also level on four sides. the shims were not right behind the hinges so they refussed the claim for right now. Home Depot has tried but we will see if this can be resolved. Never again will I buy Masonite.
I remodeled my house and had all the doors changed to the Masonite 4 panel Safe N’ Sound, thinking it would offer good sound insulation. I was wrong. It didn’t do much better than a hollow core door…there was a slight difference, not really enough to warrant the price difference. In addition, the hinges didn’t fit well. It’s not that heavy (as others have warned me about solid core doors), it looks good, and can be cut down to fit over carpeted areas. Overall, it’s an all right door if the price difference is o.k. with you.
While I realize that there are indeed better doors out there, for the price these are exceptional. I suspect that the installers were likely at fault in many of the reviews on this board. Obviously expectations run high, but remember people; you get what you pay for. Advice…hire a competent installer.
We bought 3 sets of french entry doors hoping to have better heat effieciency. They were so ill fitting we could hang our clothes to dry beside them from the breeze that was caused by the gaps. Our installer literally spent hours trying to make them fit. Finally the company rep came but wouldn’t accept responsibility and said it was the installer who hadn’t properly fit the doors. We had to redrill holes so that the doors would fit and had to make adjustments that we shouldn’t have had to do for premade doors. These doors are VERY poorly constructed. Don’t waste your money on these or you’ll be sorry.
I bought a few of the prehung doors and there were no real instructions – but when i called the manufacurer’s help line—MASONITE HELP LINE
1.800.663.DOOR (3667)—they explained how the door splits apart for easier installation. i was glad for the customer service. i’ve had no other trouble.

I bought and installed 9 Save n sound doors. Intallation was a chore; all the complaints that others had, I readily concur. The manufacturer does not really care about quality. Aside from all the problems of installation, I have had issues with the doors expanding and contracting on a seasonal basis. The doors will close perfectly in the summer but in the winter, they go out of alignment and bind or misalign with the latch hole.
I purchased 5 Masonite Safe ‘N Sound, Pre-hung, 6-panel interior doors at Home Depot, all were special order. Home depot called me 23 days after I placed the order, to tell me that my doors were in. I rushed down to pick them up, as I had already removed one complete door/trim/casing in anticipation of a quick DIY installation of my first pre-hung door project. Well, it wasn’t that quick, took me 6 hours for the first one – start to finish. But, the problem wasn’t the door, it was the rough opening. The drywall extended about an inch past the studs all the way around on both sides, so I had to trim that down. The sole plate on one side was not flush with the stud, but I was able to shim to correct that. But, when finished, I was happy-the door fit perfectly, was balanced, handle/lock fit hole and strike plate effortlessly, it was great for a first time. So I thought the rest of the four remaining doors would be a snap—not so! The next attempt was a disaster-after a whole day of trying the door to fit, I finally figured it was out of plumb and not square to frame. The hinges were not aligned with their cutouts, the jambs were just the slightest bit off (stapled together), not flush on top, plus the hinge screws/holes in both the door and the jamb were stretched out, making it impossible to snug the hinges at all. I then swapped the whole door/jamb set for another one, which appeared like it was made closer to spec tolerances, I am now on day two trying to get that door to close evenly/smoothly, with no success. I may end up doing what R. Richards did-tear the whole thing down and rebuild the jambs square, aligning the hinges correctly and filling and re-drilling the screw holes. Afterwards I only have 3 more doors to install. You get what you pay for! True, HD may take them back for an exchange with another special order set of doors, along with a 3 week wait, just to get more of the same quality control product. Never Again!
The masonite pre-hung hollow core door that I installed was junk. I originally bought it because of the price, but soon realized I had been swindled. The door was very flimsy and the jamb was even more flimsy. Also, the door didn’t seem to be aligned properly when it was built.
I build houses. I bought 15 Masonite 6 panel prehung doors at Home Depot in Dalton, GA for a house I am building. 6 of the doors have been disasembled, the staples removed, and reasembled with component parts correctly aligned. Some of the miter joints were not sawed on a 45 degree angle. Some of the staples ran out of the boards. some of the routed hinge sockets were misaligned to the point that it caused the door to strick the lock side of the door stop as much as 1/2 inch out of alignment.(Yes, the wall was perfectly plumb on both sides of the door) There were splits in the wood—both facing and trim. Two men have spent an unGodly amount of time reconstructing and correcting the doors. These doors have cost my company a lot of extra time = money.
I do not plan to use masonite doors again. The material is too thin and flimsy. The production standards are obviously low. There appears to be no pride in the product. I take pride in the quality of the homes I build. I will take pride in this house also because we are hanging with the product until we turn a sow’s ear into a silk purse reguardless of the cost.
I can not imagine the problems and poor satisfaction home owners have when using these doors. I mentioned Home Depot is the place of purchase. Lowe’s has the same quality!
Never, Never, Never, Never again!!!!!!!!
Our Safe’N Sound two panel doors are performing nicely. We replaced two bedroom(30”) and two bathroom(24”) hollow core 50 year old doors. The SNS doors are considerably heavier but feel much more solid than the originals. The ‘skin’ of the doors is silky smooth(except for the ill-placed shipping stickers) and takes paint wonderfully. I would recommend using a router to mortise for hinges since the Masonite laminate chips when chiseled by hand(a razor knife is best to use on the Masonite but is a bit tedious). I can’t speak to the pre-hung style mentioned above since we replaced only the slabs. We ordered though HD and the original shipment included two hollow core doors instead of the SNS. Not sure who made the mistake…sure was easy to tell the difference when loading the doors into the station wagon! We will certainly consider Masonite when future door projects appear on the horizon.
This prehung door was not hu ng properly. The hinges were not even set in the cuts and the lock holes do not line up … out about 1/8. I’d never buy another one.
